Herricks High School and Middle School students recently took part in the 2025 regional History Day competition at Hofstra University and took home 17 awards for their research and presentations.

In the senior division, students from Herricks High School earned 14 awards, the most of any high school on Long Island, and 11 teams qualified for the state competition on April 27 at SUNY Oneonta.

Competing in the junior division, Herricks Middle School team students took home three awards and will also advance to the state level.

The National History Day competition in the Long Island Region is an academic event in which students from middle and high schools come together to showcase their historical research and critical thinking skills.

This event is part of a nationwide competition encouraging students to explore history through research, interpretation and presentation in various creative formats. In the Long Island Region alone, around 700 participants typically compete, demonstrating the region’s strong engagement with history education.

This year’s History Day theme, “Rights and Responsibilities,” challenges students to explore how individuals, groups, and governments have grappled with the concepts of rights and responsibilities throughout history. Herricks students competed in all categories, from writing papers to performing original scripts to creating websites, designing exhibits, and developing documentaries.
