Thank you for coming to our book club. It was a pleasure meeting you. I am very sad to hear that the Saddle Rock book club may be cut next year, and I would love to have it back.

Mrs. Sattern and Mrs. Werny’s book club chose great books. We have read Frindle, The Tale of Despereaux and others. Frindle is still my favorite book, and I predict that you will like it, too.

In the book club, we discussed a lot and asked lots of questions. We were allowed to speak our minds and opinions. We even shared our own families’ histories. Mrs. Sattern brought a photo of her great-grandfather’s restaurant. It made talking much more interesting. In the discussion of The Tale of Despereaux, we talked about darkness and light, love and revenge, perfidy and forgiveness, and soup! We got much deeper in our discussions.

When 8-year-old Joy Wei heard that her mom, Daisy Xia, was going to speak at the April 4 board of ed meeting, she asked if she could go, too. The third-grader wants to save her Saddle Rock Elementary School book club, one of the early-morning enrichment programs that’s rumored to be cut. Wei could barely reach the podium, but she spoke confidently and people were captivated—it put a smile on everyone’s face. Some said it was the best speech they had ever heard. (Photo by Wen Wu)

Last but not least, this program is special because our parents came, too! My mom used to read me stories when I was little. Then it stopped. We started reading different books. The book club got us reading together again, and I love it!

This book club is the best that I have ever attended and it does not equalize with my other book club at my friend’s house, where we only have a quiz and never have any important discussion. Thank you for your time and I hope you will come to the book club again.
