Rebecca Sassouni

I moved to Great Neck in 1994. My husband and I are raising our four children, including two graduates of Great Neck North High School, to be part of the fabric that weaves together the extraordinary Great Neck community. I was born in the United States in 1970, the first-born child of immigrants from Iran. I am a product of public schools in Queens, Manhattan and Roslyn; a cum laude graduate with distinction of Barnard College, Columbia University; a graduate of the Hofstra University School of Law and a former associate editor of the Hofstra Law Review.

I have long been involved in the Great Neck Public Schools, currently serving as one of three parent members on the Board of Education’s Citizens’ Advisory Committee. I am also an officer of United Parent-Teacher Council (UPTC), the umbrella parent-teacher organization across the school district; the chairperson of the UPTC Legislative Committee for many years; and the parent cochair person of the North High School Shared Decision Making Committee. Previously, I served on a Selection Committee, chaired two Nominating Committees, cochaired the JFK Shared Decision Making Committee and was a class parent and PTO board member at the JFK, North Middle and North High schools multiple times.

My record of public service is extensive. I am a longstanding officer of SHAI (Sephardic Heritage Alliance, Inc.) and a cofounder of the Persian Culture Committee. For many years, I coordinated SHAI’s community educational forums. This spring, I will conclude more than a decade as an officer and board member of Temple Israel of Great Neck and my third year as a board member of the Solomon Schechter Schools of Long Island. At Schechter, I served on the Collective Bargaining Committee. I am completing a yearlong fellowship for emerging leaders identified by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). I am a member of the Yashar Attorneys and Judges Chapter of Hadassah and a former member of the Nominating Committee of the Great Neck Library.

Professionally, I am an attorney at law in private practice. I am a member of the Nassau County Bar Association’s Education Law Committee, where I present on emerging case law and attend the Annual School Law Conference of the Nassau and Suffolk Bar Association. Additionally, I am a New York State Certified Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Facilitator.

I am a 2014 inductee to the Nassau County Women’s Roll of Honor and have twice been a Hadassah Woman of Honor recipient. For more information regarding my qualifications to serve on the Great Neck Public Schools Board of Education, read my bio, which has been translated into Mandarin, Farsi, Spanish and Hebrew, at www.rebeccaforboe.com or email rebeccaforboardofeducation@gmail.com.
